Microneedling Q&A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses a device affixed with tiny needles to create tiny micro wounds in your skin. The micro wounds aren’t visible to the eye, but stimulate your body to produce a healing response and improve your skin’s tone, texture, and appearance.

Your body initiates a healing response to microneedling just like it does other wounds. Right after a microneedling session, your blood flow to the treated area increases. Your body also produces more collagen, a major skin protein that increases strength and resilience, in response to the treatment.

As a result of microneedling, your skin builds new cells, creates new networks of blood vessels, and remodels to replace the micro wounds with new tissue.

How can I benefit from microneedling?

Microneedling brightens up a dull complexion. It also helps with skin concerns, such as:

  • Acne scarring
  • Keloid scarring
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Sun damage, or aging skin

Microneedling triggers skin healing and revitalization.

Does microneedling hurt?

In your 30-minute microneedling treatment, you feel only mild discomfort. Prior to your treatment, the technician applies a topical numbing cream to ease any sensation. Most people tolerate the treatment well and experience minimal side effects.

Do I need to schedule downtime following a microneedling session?

Following your microneedling session, you may have slight redness and irritation for a few days. These aftereffects appear much like a mild sunburn. Some people may experience a day or two of skin tightness, itching, peeling, and tenderness.

You can go back to your normal activities after microneedling, but don’t schedule a major presentation or event for a week, or a little longer so you can look your best.

The Stillwater Aesthetics and Wellness team gives tips on how to care for your skin in the first days after microneedling. The channels created during your session make your skin especially receptive to serums and creams that promote further healing and skin rejuvenation.
